Rose Parade Preview

I woke up at 7 am today (OMG) to preview the making of some Rose Parade floats w/ my dad, who was on assignment for it anyways (he's a cameraman for this television station in Taiwan). He needed some help w/ interviewing the people working there, so I talked to some strangers as well. Fun!

^lots of scaffoldings and ladders

^the Mad Hatter! Decapitated!

We went to this warehouse for the floats in Irwindale, and there was a crowd of volunteers & tourists. Most of the volunteers were high-schoolers working for community service hours, and most of the tourists were seniors from all over the U.S. While interviewing some tourists, it seemed that they were pretty fascinated with the whole parade gig, compared my view of taking the parade for granted.

^Lots and lots of roses. Yum.

^Rose Queen's Float (unfinished)

^Volunteers v

One of the highlights of 2009's parade is skateboarding bulldogs. On Natural Balance's (pet fud co.) float, there will be a mini race track in which two bulldogs, Tyson and Tillman, will skate along. It's pretty awesome.

^You can see the racetrack and the blurry dog (the trainer is the woman in blue)

^Ktla (Chnl 5) was there too

The dogs like to skateboard. A lot.

Cheating in Vidja Games.

Scoff All You Want, Everyone Cheats

Of course, there are always hardcore gamers who despise cheat devices. They stand firm in the notion that it's a gamer's responsibility to hunker down, roll up his sleeves and attack punishing games with resolute determination. The critique from hardcore types is codes like invincibility and unlimited lives take away from a game by removing the need for skill, timing and effort, thus eliminating the elements of fear and suspense.

But even the most hardcore can't deny using codes for games. I'm convinced most people played Contra using the Konami code, a code so pervasive that it has become an industry and pop culture icon adorning T-shirts and coffee mugs. What the code did was enable gamers to approach and play a wonderful game through to the end, whereas only the most dedicated hardcore gamers with lots of time and patience could beat it with the standard three lives. Stage select codes and secret passwords like the infamous "JUSTIN BAILEY" password in Metroid were other common ways of extending the gameplay experience, adding perks to already beloved games.

The Glory Days of Cheating Have Come and Gone

Truth be told, there hasn't been a maddening, throw-your-controller-and-punch-a-hole-in-the-wall game since before I was born. Software developers, by and large, are now effectively balancing difficulty, or at least providing multiple difficulty levels. Games for current-gen consoles are also getting shorter as budgets reach astronomical levels. As a result, console games get straight to the point and deliver gameplay and narrative in a succinct package. Take a modern game like Gears of War where, in addition to offering three difficulty levels, players can die dozens of times and restart from the most recent checkpoint (of which there are plenty). Gears of War also doesn't require players to find all the optional COG Tags- or in GoW 2, Collectibles- in order to progress through the game, so there is a considerable cut down on tedium.

Furthermore, the actual hardware of current-gen consoles doesn't seem to be as cheat-device friendly as those of years past. Try as you might, you won't find a genuine cheat device for a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. And this is a good thing if for one main reason: online gaming.

The Internet Has Changed the World

Just as the proliferation of online multiplayer has drastically changed console gaming, it has also changed the way gamers can (and can't) cheat.

Sure, in-game codes and passwords for unlocking various extra features and abilities are still somewhat common, but anything that could provide an unfair competitive edge online is considered outright heresy. Indeed, the gaming community often equates cheating in online multiplayer games to criminal activity. It's one thing to cheat to overcome what one personally considers a tedious design flaw or unfair gameplay; the opponent is an artificial CPU. Cheating online is like putting your name on another man's doctoral thesis on the, or stealing his car and having sex with his girlfriend. Maybe both on the same weekend.

Does this mean the days of cheating have come to an end? Hardly. Tech savvy gamers will always find a way to exploit games, if only just for kicks. Then there are always the MacGyver hackers whose ultimate goal is not so much finishing a game, but debugging it and discovering all its little hidden secrets. Besides, it's all about game saves these days. Thanks to the standardization of hard drives and high-capacity storage memory on current-gen consoles, downloading a save file that contains unlocked, hard earned content is a snap. Fortunately, game saves won't let a player go online in Call of Duty 4 or Halo 3 with unlimited ammo and invincibility, so the sanctity of social gaming is safe for the time being.

Even if cheating has seen its time come and go, gaming itself might just be better off. When game developers manage to consistently find the sweet spot in balancing difficulty, game content and overall gameplay, gamers will consequently find themselves in a pure state of Zen. Cheating will become obsolete.

Holiday Movies 08

Yesman

:is about this loan officer who declines to every offer in his job and life, and therefore is mucho blah. When he attends this seminar to say 'yes' to every offer presented to him however, a series of comic happenings ensue. This movie seems to be both comedy and a bit drama, as romance shows up as a big role. The movie is actually mediocre, due its over-dramatic (and random) plot. But if you like Jim Carrey, then it's not that bad. He's a funny guy.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

The plot was just ridiculous.
These alien-things come back to Earth to destroy humans, but for some reason, this lady convinces the alien that the humans can "change". And the aliens leave.

Yeah, it's wtf all over- don't watch it.

And...it's a rainy Christmas.

Joy.

It should clear up by afternoon, however...

Merry Christmas! (1:24:52 AM)

I Am pulling an all-nighter.

Santa!!!!

Is it just me, or was there no Christmas Spirit this year?

I mean, usually, the birth of our messiah is celeberated by a blatant overload of consumerism.

This year? Not so much.

I'm going to go refine the banner now.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Edit: Banner's up, but it doesn't have the Jazznkat charm.
Oh, and the reason I'm on Santa's sleigh is because I'm highjacking it. True to the Spaz word.

A New Kind of Stage

In Vegas (yeah I went there again),
I found a nu stage for violining-
The Streets.

Lol so I was practicing in the hotel room (Bally's), and toook a break.
My dad then had this brilliant idea for me to play on the streets, and collect money in my violin case, like those musicians you see in Old Town Pas.
At first I was like
NOITSTOOEMABRRESSINGbut-
Why not?

And so I did it.
I parked my violin and I right in front of this mall on the Strip-
where there were people crossing an intersection close to us.
and I started playing.

I found out that if I played music that people associated with,
I would get more donations.
E.g., when I played my Mendelssohn, donations
were scarce;
however with a few rounds of 'Silent Night',
more people dropped $ in the case.

In 30 minutes, I collected $8.08. (Which I am going to donate to charity [I can't bear to do something like this for my own profit])
That's double the minimum wage!
I could never go hungry! :D

I can walk on water, I can fly!

So I realized I haven't done a junk post in a while. Here it is!

About the whole Joe Satriani vs Coldplay thing, I'm saying Coldplay probably listened to the chorus of "If I Could Fly" and did a string part of it. However, some notes are taken out, it's been transferred to string/vocals, and that part is only the last two lines of the Viva la Vida chorus.

In addition, music melodies *can* be copyrighted, but not chord progressions. I put the astericks there because all ragtime songs are basically the same melody (piano anyways).

We'll call it a wash?

In other, completely unrelated news, there's a place in the Middle East where Jesus turned water into 2,000 years of unending conflict!

...

Moving on!

Our economy is in a big slump, and this time, there's no one to World War us out of it. When did Europe get so lazy?

Oh, and I'll work on a Fable 2 review sometime next week, if I can find out how to take screenshots. If all else fails, I can just take pictures by hand or rip them off the series of tubes.

Game Review: 2moons (MMORPG)

(if anyone wants to play, we play in Trieste(Blades))
Hopefully the first of many (up next in line is Fable 2, then Gears of War 2 etc etc.)
___

Well, I downloaded this game two days ago, and signed up for what looked like a remake of WoW and Guild Wars mashed together, except free. Whatever I say from this point on probably won't be glowing with praise.

So, the moment I logged on, I was already disappointed. Even the login screen showed the game interface for what it was: overly simplified, confusing, muddled, and very inconvenient. For one thing, there was no character customization. If you wanted a specific class, it gives you a little cookie cutter of a character. If you want to be a healer, like I did, you were stuck being a purple cat-girl with an ugly ponytail. It also gave you a bit of poorly-written lore on the class you picked. Even RUNESCAPE or-so help me God- BATTLEON has character customization. The character creation screen looked like a crumpled up piece of World of Warcraft's character creation.

Is that a good enough introduction? Tell me if I'm being too nice about this game.

Only horribly disappointing games would
force you to be a scantily clad woman. Normally,
the people do it by themselves.
Interface:

Like I said before, the game interface was very confusing and overly simplified. If I didn't know better, I'd say the interface and controls were just a poor attempt to mix the Guild Wars and WoW interfaces together and make everything visible at first sight, so people would see the tangible results of their "effort".

Oh wait, it is.
What I loved so much about Maplestory was the control scheme. There really was nothing better. You could take every key on your keyboard and turn it into a hotkey, or rearrange them. In addition, there was no clutter at all, and everything served a immediately known purpose. Even the chat system was amazing, even if it was a bitch to switch between chatboxes.

Now think of 2moons' interface as it's drunken second cousin twice removed.

Everything is clutter, the only way to efficiently talk to other people is to invite them to your party, and the chatboxes get in your way, even if you set the transparency all the way to 100%.
In addition, everything is way too big, and makes your screen feel small and limited even if you're using a 24" LCD monitor.

The controls are clunky and unwieldy, and sometimes, the game doesn't respond when you use a skill, which is a big problem for healers because ALL THEY DO IS USE THE HEAL SKILL.

Also, there are two sets of the same button, which shouldn't happen. If Acclaim eliminated the sidebar, I could actually use the inventory without either cutting myself or moving the window to the center every time I open it up. Also, even though the game makes all these efforts to help you and give you tips, all it does is make you ignore it even more and you end up scratching your head when you're wondering what to do. You also usually have no idea what to do, even though the game practically walks you through it while holding your hand and giving you cotton candy.
Amazing, isn't it? I guess that's what happens when you jam all the cookies you can in the jar and it ends up exploding in your face.
Honestly, the chat box. Really, Acclaim?
The screen makes the game feel horribly limited.

Visuals:

The visuals of this game really aren't much to talk about. However, taking one look at the requirements for this game, I decided I could crank everything up to the highest setting.

With everything cranked up to the highest setting, the game actually looks kind of pretty, but I was downcast to see some framerate issues. So I turned everything down to the medium-high range. The framerate issues didn't really go down much. Curious, I experimented and turned everything down to the lowest setting, making it look like a smeared children's pastel drawing, and the framerate issues stayed the same.

I decided to just leave it at high-best settings.

In addition, what the game did really well was it's animation and general killing things. I loved using my blood whip on anything that moved.

Visuals are actually pretty good if
you have more-than-modest specs

Sound and BGM:

Acclaim did pretty well with the voice acting and sound effects. They were veryrealistic.

As for the background music, I'm just going to say there was none.

Yes, I know you can turn it on through options, but that crap was overly repetitive and didn't match the game at all. So I'm going to say it had no background music.

Instead, I just muted everything and turned the sound effects and voice acting up to the max, and made my own playlist on iTunes to listen to.

There really is nothing like listening to Life in Technicolor II while whipping the crap out of some spiders.
Gameplay [PvE, PvP]:
I'm going to split Player vs Enviroment and Player vs Player in two. For now, I'll rant about the gameplay in general.
Really, really good. The gameplay is just awesome.
Like I said before, killing stuff makes the game fly by. They did a great job of getting you into the game, even if it is clunky and feels limited.
Of course, there's also the fact that you really don't do much exploring. You get a really big map, but all it is is just zones seperated into different level groups for you. There's no exploring involved in it. It feels kind of like a platformer.

Camera is good at times, and at other
times just a bitch. This angle makes it look even
more like a platformer.

PvE-

The big thing about 2moons is the group playing. There's nothing like it. The problem is, because of the limited chat, it's not easy to get together a party to play with. At this point, I just teamed up with David (lee), Brandon (kim), Michael, and James and had a jolly good time killing stuff in a winter wasteland.

Good times.

PvP-

Player vs. Player. It's incredibly limited, idiotic at points, and whatever else you'd expect me to say.

However, there's this cool feature where you can put together two parties and they fight each other in an arena at any time you want.

That's about all there is to it.

Storyline:
I really didn't see any, except anything stranger than a race comprised entirely of cat-girls is a bad guy, and we apparently can use their livers to make beer (irony!)
IN CONCLUSION
The game is okay, considering it's free to play. However, it is the result of people trying to mash together a game and stuff it full of features. Also, it has a crappy staff, including the GMs and developers, who never update a thing. At least the GMs are a little more active.
Scores:
Interface and Controls: 3.8/10
Visuals: 7.3/10
Sound: 6.0/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Storyline: N/A

OVERALL: 7.2/10

xXyZaThEx (8:19:38 PM): the government needs to step in somewhere
ChaosEternaI (8:19:43 PM): Naw
xXyZaThEx (8:19:51 PM): freedom of expression needs censorship as a foundation
ChaosEternaI (8:20:03 PM): Naw
xXyZaThEx (8:20:08 PM): all i had to do was bring up an image
xXyZaThEx (8:20:13 PM): of freedom of expression
xXyZaThEx (8:20:16 PM): without limits
ChaosEternaI (8:20:25 PM): Lol
xXyZaThEx (8:20:29 PM): i also made a reference to "lord of the flies"

I will come there and save you
No one this day will harm you
If I get to you in time

Please stay right where you are
When you run the meat gets less tender
Just lie down and surrender
Could you marinate in lime?

For this is war
It's where the strong protect the weak
I know not if I'll die
But know I'll try
I'd gladly give my life for others

For this is war
I do not care whose side I'm on
I'll kill a troll or gnome
Or burn a home
And it was fun
To start this war, who knew?

Won't you please help end this war with me?

12.14.2008

LOL WTF xD

Spaztastic special!

My brother's coming home from UC Berkeley in three days (this wednesday)

Okay, I wasn't happy with the quality of these. First off, this was a complete rush job. I was planning on spending time to ink it, make sure it didn't suck, and color it with photoshop.

And then I procrastinated. I guess I'll keep covering for inactivity.

AUGGGHHH!

12.13.2008

Okay, again, this is another stub post. I just need to cover for inactivity, y'know?

I might have a comic up soon. Depends.

Here's something for your troubles.

Lyrics:
Please just stay where you are
I will come there and save you
No one this day will harm you
If I get to you in time

Please stay right where you are
When you run the meat gets less tender
Just lie down and surrender
Could you marinate in lime?

For this is war
It's where the strong protect the weak
I know not if I'll die
But know I'll try
I'd gladly give my life for others
For this is war
I do not care whose side I'm on
I'll kill a troll or gnome
Or burn a home
And it was fun
To start this war, who knew?

Won't you please help end this war with me?

Second trailer

Some more eye candy for ya. Oh, if I get this game, I'll never see daylight again. Then again, maybe I will. Because WoW really has dominated the market. It's not that the new MMORPGs suck, it's that nobody wants to play them, they want to play WoW. But if Star Wars can't stand up to one game, then Blizzard really will take over the world in fifteen years.

Anyways, I'd type up a few reviews for ya'll, especially Fable II, but I'm too busy PLAYING the game. :)

I am such a no life.

Wasn't your sister here on Thursday?

I really do recognize her for some reason.

No idea why.

12.11.2008

Inactive Kat

My sister came home!
I haven't seen her for two years.
So I'll be spending a lot of time w/ her,
and not on this blog, momentarily.

12.06.2008

Who ya gonna call?

Sorry about the two stub posts.

Yeah, I'd probably call them.

I loved the marshmallow man.

Auditorium :D

http://www.playauditorium.com/

Just thought I'd pass that along. It's basically a puzzle game that uses music.

Great music, too.

How to: Tell the Truth

Btw, this will be the last of my how-to's.
________________________________________________________________

How to:
TELL THE TRUTH.

Hey, we all lie. However, let's try to decrease the volume in of fibbing in our lives.
...This is especially hard for me, since lying is probably my worst fault.
But maybe this can be a reminder for us all.

1) Mentality- Convince yourself that being honest is the best option. Don’t let yourself find excuses. This is the most vital bit, since you are deciding and confirming to do something out of your comfort zone.

2) Breathe- <=

3) Spititout- Look at the person you are confronting right in the eye (preferably the pupil), and speak the truth. It may be hard to say it fluidly, so practice under your breath (or out loud) before the moment. Make sure you stand up straight and not stare at your toes. Actually, don’t look at anything else except for the pupil of that person’s eye, even if it’s kinda ugly, or has laser beams shooting out.

4) Attitude- Make sure you are sincere, or at least seem sincere. A negative or reluctant attitude makes the opposition skeptical.

Be Aware:

Brace yourself for the unpredictable reaction. The person you're confessing may do something very nice, or adhere to violence. Or they might just walk away. But just remember to duck, if necessary.

I am a big, fat hypocrite.
