Dear Lord, I'd Like To File a Bug Report

Please, stop, because seeing this happen to people breaks my heart. Conspiracy theories represent a known glitch in human reasoning. The theories are of course occasionally true, but their truth is most times uncorrelated with the believer's certainty. For some reason, when people think they discovered a lie, they take the facts and cut context away from facts and arguments and assemble them into reassuring litanies that have all been the same, refuted argument over and over. And over and over, I've argued with people consumed by theories they did believe were irrefutable, theories that in the end proved to be nonsense.

The moon landing people, the climate change doesn't exist people, can you not see yourself falling into the same pattern?

"You honestly believed we landed on the moon? If they were really on the moon, why was there gravity?"

...

Dear Lord.

Yes my child?

I'd like to file a bug report.

(Taken from an xkcd webcomic about conspiracy theorists. Some parts are taken word for word, others are edited.)

itt copy off comic and paraphrase it in different words to make it look like you're doing something about it

Of course, God has a plan for everything.
The best action in confronting these "conspiracy theorists" is praying for them, for yourself, and maintaining faith in the Lord.
Not whining about it.

Actually, anonymous, that was the point of the whole bottom two lines.

IF ANONYMOUS IS YOUR REAL NAME!

Oh shit, wait.

Global warming does exist, yet it is not as serious as an issue as many are taking it as. The Kyoto Protocol - don't get me started. Most media reports on global warming are propaganda issued by the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (a political body appointed by the United Nations). Most of the 3000 on the panel are political figureheads with no true understanding. Scientific facts have not backed up global warming. In fact, a petition signed by 17,200 scientists states "currently available scientific data do not support the conclusion that global warming is anything other than a naturally occurring cyclic phenomenon." That number has increased to 31,072 scientists.
About a decade back, the world was overly concerned with "global cooling." Such cycles of fear of global warming/cooling have occurred for years.
(Below is an excerpt from the website,
http://www.globalwarmingisafarce.com)
But let’s think logically…
Assuming increased CO2 emissions really do cause raised global temperatures:
If C02 emissions rise
which cause global temperatures to rise…
And rising global temperatures cause polar ice caps to melt….
Then raised global temperatures would cause more evaporation of water from our oceans…
And more evaporated water would lower the ocean levels back down and would result in more clouds in the atmosphere…
And more clouds in the atmosphere would reflect back more ultraviolet rays from the earth back into space…
And more UV rays reflected away from the earth would result in…….
…Cooler global temperatures!
(End of excerpt)
Overtly simplified? Sure, but the premise of global warming is too.

Michael Crichton's famous novel,
State of Fear. One of the best books I have ever read. While you're at it, read his other books too - Jurassic Park, Sphere, Rising Sun, etc.

And if you want, the petition project signed by 31,072 scientists.

Hey Bill, I beg to differ

Kat. said...

Please look into some Al Gore plawks

lan mao said...

Hey, I said it was partly copied.
So, you believe Al Gore, a politician and not the 31k scientists who say otherwise? If the world persists in this folly, then what the heck is science for anyway?

By the way, I'm not against helping the environment or anything. I'm just saying global warming is not a real issue. I can oppose the death penalty and still believe in law enforcement; this is the same idea.

lan mao said...

I just KNEW this would be a hot issue...
what is plawks supposed to mean anyway??? I would have looked into them if I knew what they were.

Kat. said...

You have your point, but of course

Gore won the Noble Prize and I doubt the council would have given it to him if his work was not as important as he put it.

Also, there are quite a few scientists supporting the urgency of global warming as well.

lan mao said...

True, True.
Al Gore's work has awakened the majority of the world to the environmental catastrophe, which does exist and IS very serious.
What is the argument anyway? That global warming is real?
In any case, I have to sleep and stuff. Argue tomorrow? I bet you had a nice debate.

SpazJaz said...

Bill still sleeps at 10 PM?

Also, this isn't a forum, folks. Also, using ellipses every three lines doesn't make you look dramatic, it makes you look like a douche.

And that whole idea of more clouds and evaporated water assumes we're willing to enter more uncomfortable temperatures and humidity so it gets better. Have you been to China lately?

Also, UV rays won't be fully reflected by clouds. Clouds are made up of water, a transparent material. You know how when you look at clouds, you can see them, and not see black spots? yeah.

Hey Bill is hippo-krit lololo:

"Global warming does exist, yet it is not as serious as an issue as many are taking it as. "

"Al Gore's work has awakened the majority of the world to the environmental catastrophe, which does exist and IS very serious ."

In addition, pretty much everything issued by governments is propaganda. Or are governments going to say "Hey, you're completely safe from any terrorist attacks, thanks to our new homeland security, but don't take our biased word for it, look it up on the internet! In fact, there's a 33.35% chance of us letting a terrorist attack slip by while we watch the wrong areas!"

Also, if the ice caps melt and save us after about fifty years of discomfort, that still means anything living ON the ice caps will die off, as well as anyone living by the shoreline, thanks to increased sea levels.

The way Earth survived global warming before was that a certain species of fern started thriving off all the methane in the air and reproduced to an extent that all the methane was sucked off.

After everything on Earth nearly died due to the global tropic temperature.

Wait but global warming is not propaganda
In fact it is verrry real

SpazJaz said...

Oh yeah, and your first paragraph works both ways. The petition is supported because of the increased hype about global warming. If we were still in the global cooling part of the cycle, we'd have an exact same petition.

Sooooo, Bill. What's that smell in the air?

CO2 LEVELS HAVE BEEN HIGHER THAN EVER.
If you look at the CO2 concentration levels taken from 600000 years ago to present day, the rate in which the measurements are growing are unlike anything that has happened before. In fact, it is growing quite rapidly towards 400 ppm of CO2- a number that is far from anything our little planet has achieved before.

If clouds are supposed to do their jobs, then why arent they deflecting rays now?

If you do not call that proof, I shall show you more-
If you look at the 21 hottest years measured, 20:21 have ocurred in the last 25 years.
Unpredictable temperatures-both hot and cold- have been setting records around the world.
I think something bad is happening.

In 2004, science textbooks had to be rewritten.
They said that it was impossible for hurricanes to develop in the S Atlantic, but in 2004, Hurricane Catarina hit Brazil. Freakish disasters have wrought our world with worry, and I am hopeful that we can decrease our harm to the environment before too much damage is done.

Also, you talk about those flamboyant individuals who defy the concept of global warming. Well, theyre not so reliable either.
A prominent displayer of rejecting the possibilities of global warming was the Bush Admin. And 48 Nobel Prize laureates have deemed his opposition, false.

Global warming is a srs issue, and I do hope that you LOOK INTO IT.

Q.E.D.

HOT ISSUE MUCH
I can't believe I didn't recognize plawks...WHATS WRONG WITH ME
Global warming has two sides. There is no scientific consensus on the issue. My goal was to inform at least some of you to the inconvenient truth. After you understand both sides, it'd be up to you to believe in which one.
Why would you drag the woefully inefficient Bush Administration into this? What have they ever gotten right?

Are we heading for the “demise” of the planet, to “oblivion,” if carbon dioxide levels go up much beyond their current level of 380 parts per million, or if the global temperature goes up three or four or five or, for that matter, 10 degrees from its current average of 12 degrees Celsius? I think not. If this was true then the planet and all its denizens would have died out many times in the past, because levels of carbon dioxide and the global temperature have been much higher than today for most of the past 600 million years. In fact, we’re at a 250-million-year low, teetering on the brink, not of uncontrolled global warming but of a return to ice-age conditions that the planet left only 12,000 years ago.
Here is a graph of the data.
http://www.paulmacrae.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/co2-levels-over-time1.jpg

Note that the average global temperature for the tens of millions of years when the dinosaurs and mammals evolved was around 22°C-10 degrees higher than today. Note that carbon dioxide levels have been up to ten times today’s levels. And yet, somehow, the plants, mammals and dinosaurs managed to survive; it took an asteroid to drive the dinosaurs into “oblivion.”

Note that, as the graph shows, carbon dioxide levels don’t have that much correlation with temperature over this time period. CO2 levels have fallen steadily for more than 150 million years, while the planetary temperature stayed at 22°C until about 30 million years ago. That’s when the planet’s temperature began its plunge into Ice Age conditions colder than anything in the past 300 million years. Our planet now is unusually cold by paleo-climatic standards, not warm. Carbon dioxide levels are unusually low, not high.

Note, too, that in 600 million years the global temperature hasn’t gone much above 22°C no matter how high the CO2 levels were. That’s because the relationship of CO2 to temperature is logarithmic: the more CO2 you put in, the less effect it has on temperature. This means there’s no need to fear “runaway” global warming due to carbon dioxide emissions.

However, most of our planet’s species (including us) would face oblivion should temperatures and/or carbon dioxide levels get too much lower. If CO2 dropped to, say, 125 ppm, there would be very little plant life and most forms of animal life would die.

You also stated the Earth has never risen beyond 400 ppm of CO2. False. Hothouse planters deliberately inject CO2 into enclosed spaces, causing levels of CO2 to rise over 1000 ppm. Plants thrive on CO2. It’s ironic that so many “greens” oppose global warming because a world with more carbon dioxide would be a greener world.

The true threat posed by global warming is not warming, but rather scarcity of freshwater. So don't worry about increased temperatures; worry rather about our water shortage and our crisis with oil. Global warming is not serious in the sense that temperatures are rising. It is serious (ignore previous statements), however, because of aforementioned threats.

P.S. Hypocrite? Sorry for not proofreading my copy pasted work.

SpazJaz said...

Yet, Bill, you said Global Warming was not serious.

However, in your last post, you said global warming caused freshwater shortages, and warned us about it.

HIPPO-KRITICAL!

(And kath, p'zOWN. ever been to pizza hut lately?)

SpazJaz said...

In addition, the whole edge thing, it's not the threat of how high the CO2 levels are getting, it's the rate at which we're pumping into the atmosphere. In about one and a half centuries, we've pushed the pollution in our world more than 200%. Who knows how far we could go?

Oh, and I didn't say anything about the Bush Administration. Changing the subject so you can use the word woefully does NOT make you sound smart.

So yes, the threat of global warming isn't how high the CO2 levels have gotten, but at the rate it is climbing.

KAT dragged Bush and his retarded administration into this. Contrary to what you may think, not everything is directed at you.

lan mao said...

Anyways, speaking of conspiracy theories - Wikipedia has a whole list of em. Here's a - interesting - one.

Arab-fascist axis

"Radio talk show host David Emory claims that Nazi leader Martin Bormann never died and has built a global empire involving, among many others, the Bush family, Hassan al Banna, Grover Norquist, Meyer Lansky, and Michael Chertoff. This may have sprung from the factual World War Two alliance between Nazi Germany and the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, a religious and political leader of the area then known as Palestine."

And of course, we all know about the Antichrist theory.

Kat. said...

Yes I did drag the Bush Admin into this, because they were one of the front-runners in denying global warming (ahem PHILLIP COONEY).

I thought the gov. collaborated with Al Gore recently, but apparently Bush just passed some midnight regulations that seem not so environmentally-freindly...

lan mao said...

Well, it's Bush.

And Cabinet.
And Congress.

Etc.
